Amy's Faith-Based Books
Writing faith-based books blesses Amy in a way unlike her other writing.
How did Amy begin writing for faith-based publications? To find the answer, we have to start long ago. When Amy was a little girl, she didn’t want to be a writer. She wanted to be a teacher like her mother. After Amy grew up and married, that changed. She stayed home to take care of her baby daughter, Emily, and while Emily napped, Amy wrote stories. And she discovered she loved writing! This is what she wanted to do with her life.
Around that same time, Amy read the Bible for the very first time. Amy's family is Jewish. Jews don't believe Jesus is the Son of God. But after reading the Bible, Amy's beliefs evolved. She was still Jewish, but she had a different view of God. She started to believe Jesus was God's son. She wanted to share her newfound understanding when writing for children, but she had a unique perspective. Sometimes Amy writes Jewish stories. Sometimes she writes Christian stories. But she always tries to write from her own truth and to be inclusive, compassionate, and loving.
Because Amy's family celebrated Christmas (and Hanukkah), it was natural for her to write about this favorite holiday. Emily was three-years old when Amy celebrated her first publication. Her poem, “The Five Senses of Christmas,” was printed in the Christian magazine, Alive for Young Teens. And her first (of over 100) picture book was an ABC book with a Christmas theme. While financial obligations kept Amy from living her dream of writing full-time, her background, as a children's librarian, preschool teacher, and features writer/reporter for the local newspaper, prepared her well for a freelance career. With each job, Amy yearned to be at home writing. Currently, she is fortunate enough to be able to do that.
Amy’s faith-based books include God's Earth is Something to Fight For (Sunbeam/Bushel & Peck), Christian Q&A Book For Kids (Rockridge Press), God’s Protection Covers Me (Beaming Books), The Giant Book of Bible Fingerplays for Preschoolers (Group Publishing) and others. Her stories, articles, and poetry have been published in Mysterious Ways, Pockets, and Standard program books.
Amy placed second in the Angel Book Awards and the 2020 Christian Market Children’s Book of the Year for her picture book God’s Protection Covers Me (Beaming Books, 2019).
Amy and her husband, Steve, attend the First United Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri, where Amy has been involved in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Bible Study, and committee work for many years. They live in rural Northwest Missouri, an hour from Steve’s family farm. Amy and Steve are the parents of two grown daughters and three grandchildren.
